Divorce Dos and Donts

Your Conduct During A Divorce

1. Do try to maintain good communication with your spouse and children.

2. Do talk to your lawyer before agreeing to a settlement.

3. Don't physically or verbally abuse your spouse or children.

4. Don't say anything to others that you wouldn't want your spouse or the judge to hear.

5. Don't raid the bank and take all the money. Call us first about this.

6. Don't go on a spending spree. Excessive spending on yourself or others may harm your case.

7. Don't throw away financial records or other possible evidence.

8. Don't try to hide evidence or assets.

9. Don’t cut off your partner financially

10. Do support your children. This is your divorce, not theirs.

11. Don’t make patently false allegations of domestic violence. This may hurt you.

12. Do allow your children liberal visitation with their parent.

13. Do get psychological help if you need it.

14. Don’t forget that your lawyer is trained in law, not psychology. See a psychologist for your emotional needs and support. It may be cheaper than calling us.

15. Don’t withhold visitation of your children. This may lead to your spouse being awarded custody.

16. Do remember that anything you say, can and will be used against you.

These are general guidelines for you to follow. No two cases are alike.
